The city teachers union voted 4-to-1 to endorse Delphine Hartwell for mayor on Friday, citing her classroom decade and her fully funded schools plan.

"Delphine taught fourth grade for ten years. She doesn't need a briefing to understand our classrooms — she graded papers in them," said union president Maria Santos, herself a former colleague of Hartwell's at Elm Street Elementary.

The endorsement brings 3,100 members plus phone banks in the final two weekends. Hartwell’s education plan promises universal pre-K by year two, after-school in every elementary school, and a $3,000 classroom-supply stipend so teachers stop paying out of pocket.

Hartwell will join educators for a schools town hall next month. Details will be posted on the Events page as soon as the venue is confirmed.
